Born from a Passion for Conservation and Community
The Friends of Usambara Cultural Tourism Enterprise (FoU-CTE), established in 1997, is a Tanzanian subsidiary of the NGO Friends of Usambara Society, promoting sustainable development in the Usambara Mountains.
A Legacy of Sustainable Tourism
FoU-CTE began with walking tours developed with the Cultural Tourism Programme, funded by SNV Netherlands, sharing tourism profits with the community. This sustainable development philosophy still guides FoU-CTE.
Empowering People and Protecting the Environment
We design tours to educate visitors on the Usambara Mountains’ ecology and culture while directing profits to community development projects chosen by the FoU steering committee.
Exploring the Usambaras: From West to East
FoU-CTE’s roots are in the West Usambaras, the traditional homeland of the Shambaa people and their neighbors. Today, we’re expanding our operations to encompass the Eastern Usambaras and the surrounding lowlands, offering walking tours across a wider region.
Join us on an unforgettable journey through the Usambara Mountains. Together, let’s explore, learn, and empower a brighter future for the region.
